Westlake’s Jakiah Leftwich commits to Georgia Tech

Georgia Tech picked up its 10th commitment for the 2021 signing class and its seventh since April 28. Westlake High offensive tackle Jakiah Leftwich announced his commitment Friday, becoming the first offensive lineman in the group.

Leftwich has been a key recruit for Tech coaches. Tech was among the first schools to offer him, and he made multiple unofficial visits to Yellow Jackets games last season. At 6-foot-6 and 302 pounds, he has the sort of size that coach Geoff Collins and offensive line coach Brent Key have made a priority.

Including grad transfers Devin Cochran and Ryan Johnson, the signing class for 2020 includes six offensive linemen who are 6-4 or taller. Leftwich is a three-star prospect, rated the No. 58 player in the state of Georgia and the No. 62 offensive tackle in the country (247Sports Composite). He also announced offers from Florida State, Arizona State and Tennessee, among others.

On his highlight video, Leftwich shows an ability to use his reach well and a taste for finishing off blocks.

Leftwich is also noteworthy in committing from a school in the Fulton County school system. He is the first such prospect among the 2021 committed players and would join three incoming freshmen who also are graduates of Fulton County schools – linebackers Khatavian Franks and Tyson Meiguez (Creekside High) and defensive end Kyle Kennard (Riverwood High).

In the five classes prior to Collins’ arrival, including the 2019 class, Fulton’s public schools yielded two signees, including quarterback Jordan Yates, a 2019 signee from Milton. It would seem evidence of the success of Collins’ strategy to begin recruiting efforts closest to Tech, represented in his “#4the404” slogan, a hashtag that Leftwich included in his tweet announcing his commitment.
