MEMORIAL DAY FORECAST: Warm with summertime pattern of storms

Metro Atlanta is kicking off the unofficial start to summer with a typical summertime pattern of heat and afternoon storms.

There is a chance for rain each day through Memorial Day weekend, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Katie Walls. The risk of severe weather, however, is low.

After several days in the 60s earlier this week, temperatures are rising for the weekend.

“We’re talking about highs in the upper 80s with typical afternoon showers and storms,” Walls said. “It’s something we tend to see during the summer months.”

Memorial Day has a 60% chance for rain, and the projected high is 82 degrees, according to the latest forecast.

A wedge of cool air may lead to afternoon showers, which could put a damper on those outdoor plans.

“If I were barbecuing, I would make it a lunch and not dinner, as more widespread showers will be developing mid-afternoon through the evening,” Channel 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

Overall, the weekend should be a nice one, Walls said. It will be a marked change from the cooler, cloudy weather that metro Atlanta saw at the start of the week.

Those conditions were due to an area of low pressure stuck above the Southeast. That low is slowly moving north and away from North Georgia, Walls said.

“As it drifts away, our conditions will improve, meaning more sunshine and warmer temperatures starting this afternoon,” she said Thursday.

Rain chances are lowest Saturday and Sunday at 20% and 30%, respectively, according to Channel 2. The warmest day will be Saturday with a projected high of 87 degrees.
